Named for the first mate from Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, Starbucks started out as a small store in Seattle in 1971. Since then the company has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. However, Starbucks aims to be more than just a coffee shop. They want to be a place of community, to provide a true coffeehouse experience. Starbucks' “mission is to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time”.
